and exaggerated with prophesies of doom around every corner.  It’s not that bad, lets be honest most business data is only of interest to...well that business.  But, and this is the important point, it’s absolutely critical to that business.  So computer security is more about protecting your data from damage rather than theft or hackers.  Damage of course can be accidental, deliberate or caused by hardware failure, the main point is you can recover the data, secondary is what caused it.  Computer Security really deals with the first two causes and their main protagonist the employee.

Permissions

Permissions are critical to securing your data, it is correctly setting permissions that avoids many of the “oops” problems.  Restricting access to certain data and folders (maybe just removing the ability to delete) can be all that is necessary.  This can boost user confidence as they cannot easily make a mess of things.

Firewalls

Firewalls come in many flavours, from the very basic (The Windows XP Free one).

To hardware proxy firewalls costing thousands of pounds.  There is a place for all of them (I won’t mention the place I’d put the windows free one). Seriously the right firewall for your business is out there, and in most cases if you buy the right hardware already built into it.  The most common mistake I see in small businesses is not “no firewall” but more “too many firewalls”.  They have firewalls built into their hardware, software firewalls installed on their PC’s and then windows free firewall also enabled on the PC’s.  They call me in because the PC’s are slow.. That brings me to the next section.

Slow PC - Spybots, Adware, Trojans and Diallers

These will grind your PC’s performance into the ground.  The first two are largely innocuous, they gather marketing information telling their masters about your Internet habits (and they use your PC to do this work!).  The second group are more dangerous.  Trojans are designed to trick you into allowing a rogue program to run (therefore bypassing your normal anti-virus protection).  Often the program install a “Dialler”.  This program then phones high cost phone numbers (provided the PC has access to a modem).  All these programs must be removed regularly to keep the PC performance acceptable.
